Research Interests
Laboratory diagnosis of human
and animal mycoses: direct microscopy of biological samples; isolation and
identification of fungal agents from culture: yeasts, dermatophytes fungi and
other fungi isolated from other superficial, subcutaneous and systemic mycoses.
Isolation and identification of tropical pathogenic fungi. Antifungal in
vitro sensitivity testing. Cryptococcus neoformans antigen detection.
Molecular identification of pathogenic fungi.
Current Projects
Molecular diagnosis of vaginal candidosis and antifungal sensitivity evaluation.
Study of in vitro sensitivity to the antifungal drugs used in the treatment of these infections: fluconazole, itraconazole,
ketoconazole and voriconazole. Direct detection of yeasts in clinical samples
using different molecular techniques based on PCR.

Sensitivity study of pathogenic yeasts isolated from blood stream ans CSF to
different compounds with antifungal activity. Gene-targeting with natural compounds to control pathogenic yeasts. Not presently funded.

Prevalence and epidemiological studies of dermatophytes and yeasts in children
from Cova da Moura, a suburb slum of Lisbon.

Molecular identification of yeasts directly from histopathologic preparations
